Pure Honey
The first is our location, a 5,000-acre farm in a remote, hill country location in New Zealand’s central North Island. Our family has owned this farm for many years. That’s why we’re as dedicated and as passionate about our land as we are the honey we produce.
Manuka trees grow in abundance on our farm, and they are an essential part of the environment and landscape. They provide shelter to the wildlife that lives in this part of New Zealand, and they help to prevent erosion, something which is very important in this hill country location.
The Manuka trees in this area are also central to the production of our honey. In fact, as Manuka honey is a mono-floral honey, it must come from the nectar of this single tree.
As a family, we’re passionate about working with nature and creating sustainable practices that enhance the beautiful King Country landscape rather than taking away from it. That’s why we shifted away from conventional farming practices, and created Wilderness Valley to produce pure NZ honey.
Here at Wilderness Valley, our production process harnesses the power of the land in such a way that it will be just as beautiful in 100 years as it is today. The Manuka trees on our farm aren’t just responsible for producing our amazing UMF™ Manuka Honey – they also provide protection against erosion of our steeper slopes. These trees also act as shelter for our wildlife, such as the native falcon and the blue duck.
Part of those farming practices involves spacing out our apiaries to give each colony a wide area to collect nectar. Not only does this approach reduce the risk of overpopulating, but we believe it also results in a higher quality honey product.
We also look after the bush, including by planting as many as 15,000 Manuka trees every year. These trees help to protect the natural environment as well as contributing to the pure, natural honey that we produce.
Honey production takes place right here on our family-owned hill country station. We look after all stages of the production process, from beekeeping to extracting the honey from the hives. We also have a facility where all the bottling and packaging of our honey takes place. This approach ensures consistent high quality in every jar of honey we produce.
